If you have not heard by now, the NHL has chosen to reject Ilya Kovalchuk’s new deal with the New Jersey Devils, on the grounds that the deal circumvents the league’s salary cap and the current CBA (Story). Kovy’s 17-year deal at about $102 million was the talk of the league, fans, and forum boards for the last couple of days. Was it fair? Should contracts like this be allowed? Does anyone really expect him to play through those 7 years at the end only making $7 million during that period?
